YOUTUBE CHECKS

YouTube has started rolling out a tool called “Checks”, which analyzes the content you’re trying to upload before you publish.

What does this mean?

Copyright covers various types of work – text, music, videos, and art to mention a few. Youtube and other content sharing platforms have always been criticized for allowing people use their platforms to post and monetize content which they do not own or have license to use.

Prior to this time, efforts made to curtail this were mostly applicable to content which have already been shared/ posted e.g. the owner submits a request that your content be taken down, among other things.

This new tool will go through your content and then point out issues which need to be addressed before publishing, thereby reducing to a large extent, the possibility of posting infringing material. The checks may also refuse to let you monetize video content, stating that relevant advertising revenues will only be paid to the real copyright owner.

It may not be perfect yet, but it is definitely a step in the right direction in the war against digital copyright infringement. It is also hoped that other content sharing, and perhaps even social media platforms will take a cue from this and begin to find innovative solutions with the help of artifical intelligence.

As a content creator, save yourself the stress and ensure that whatever you create or seek to publish does not violate anyone’s copyright. Beyond Youtube’s measures and their effect on your business especially if you make money online, you could be inviting a lawsuit.
